Intelligent Design

JackLewis blogged Once government schools became tools for proselyting for the religion of Evolution, real science was scrapped.

Kevin Drum blogged By the way, I'm glad to see that the Kansas folks aren't wasting time pretending that Intelligent Design has nothing to do with religion or creationism. Newly elected board member Kathy Martin is open about where she stands: "There are alternatives. Children need to hear them....We can't ignore that our nation is based on Christianity — not science."

Why not both?
OTB blogged There is serious scientific debate about the nature of evolution but not its fact. There is, however, no legitimate scientific basis to believe that life was created by a being with super-magical powers.
Nor is there any legitimate scientific basis to believe it was not.
There are ways to square science and religious faith--some substantial number of our most brilliant scientists are also Christians--but the two are not interchangeable.

OTB blogged So what is going to be the result of this "show trial"? A loss for evolution. Intelligent Design and Creationism will come out looking more persuasive and it will ultimately be a loss for our children if educational policies are changed to incorporate the Intelligent Design pseudo-science.
As opposed to the Secular Humanist pseudo-science?
OTB blogged At its roots, Creationism, is anti-science.
But Intelligent Design is not.
In this regard I agree with Scott. If you want to be a Creationist, fine by me, just don't try to force that view on the rest of us please. And of those of us who don't want to be Creationists is where you'll find future scientists.

Many blogging about what is going on in Kansas seem to lump Creationism and Intelligent Design together, and say that both are in conflict with the Theory of Evolution. I do not think they are the same. It is my understanding that Creationism believes the story in Genesis is literally correct: that the world was created in six days. That is certainly in conflict with the Theory of Evolution. But as I understand it proponents of Intelligent Design believes that there was a Creator in charge of Creation. IMHO the Big Bang theory, which holds that all matter in the universe was in one large Cosmic egg which exploded, is consistent with Intelligent Design. After all, who created the Cosmic Egg, and who made it explode in a burst of energy (Let there be light). I see no reason why Intelligent Design AND Evolution cannot be right. I can't prove they are right, and that Creationists are wrong, so I believe children should be exposed to all theories.

Roughly speaking, evolution tells us that complicated things evolved outta simpler things. ID tells us that some things are so complicated, they must have been created that way.

The two are fundamentally incompatible.

I disagree. ID tells us that somethings are so complicated they could not have just evolved from simpler things, without the help of an Intelligent Designer.

Creationism says that things were just created that way.
