NYT Shows Its Bias

The New York Times shows its bias in reporting Lawmakers in Venezuela Approve Expanded Power for Chávez - New York Times

The National Assembly approved a constitutional overhaul on Friday that would enhance President Hugo Chávez’s authority, allowing him to be re-elected indefinitely and giving him the power to handpick rulers, to be called vice presidents, for various new regions to be created in the country. The 69 amendments still need to be approved by voters in a Dec. 2 referendum before they take effect.
but Musharraf Warned Not to Impose Emergency Rule - New York Times
A senior American commander, Adm. William J. Fallon, warned Pakistan’s president on Friday not to impose emergency rule, saying that doing so would jeopardize American financial support for the military here.
NYT does not seem to matter that Dictator Chávez (someone that hates America) wants to change the rules to keep himself in power, but it is not OK for Musharraf (a leader we are on reasonably good terms with) to do it. But Musharraf did not listen. Whether that is a good thing or not remains to be seen. Earthtimes indicates akistan is considering enforcement of Islamic laws in Pakistan's north-western Swat valley to meet the demands of pro-Taliban militants who briefly seized and then released around 100 security personnel after nine days' fierce fighting that left more than 200 people dead. "The government is considering the implementation of Sharia law in the view of the demands of the local people," said Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai, governor of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) in which the valley is situated.
That could be a good thing, because once they are in place the people may not like living under such strict laws, and if the government backs off on them after a while they may get support from the people living there.
but what will happen to Benazir Bhutto?.

Women's Sexy Clothing Distracting Muslim Men From Sleep, Prayers

FOXNews reported Malaysia's Muslim men are suffering sleepless nights and cannot pray properly because their thoughts are distracted by a growing number of women who wear sexy clothes in public, a prominent cleric said.
I recommend cold showers.
Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the spiritual leader of the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, said he wanted to speak about the "emotional abuse" that men face because it is seldom discussed, the party reported on its Web site Wednesday.
If they are distracted by it, it is because they like it.
"We always [hear about] the abuse of children and wives in households, which is easily perceived by the eye, but the emotional abuse of men cannot be seen," Nik Abdul Aziz said. "Our prayers become unfocused and our sleep is often disturbed."
You poor, poor men.
Nik Abdul Aziz has made controversial comments about women in the past, including that women should stop wearing lipstick and perfume to lower the risk of being raped.
Alternatively why not castrate Muslim Males?
Women's groups have slammed his statements, saying Islam teaches both men and women to be responsible for modesty. They say comments like these encourage rapes because it puts the onus on women.

Iran warns Europe against sanctions

Jerusalem Post reported Hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday warned European countries not to follow the US lead in imposing unilateral sanctions against his country, state radio reported. Ahmadinejad threatened unspecified retaliation by Iran if Europe followed in the footsteps of the United States, which last week announced sanctions against the Islamic state.
In other words "If you stop us from getting nukes, we'll attack you. If you allow us to get nukes, we'll attack Israel. And then we'll attack you, if you have not already surrendered."
"If they plan to cooperate with the enemy of the Iranian nation, we cannot interpret this as a friendly behavior. We will show reaction," the radio quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week

Jebediah Koogler wrote in Brown University Daily Herald and also Foreign Policy Watch There was an elephant in the room during Robert Spencer's provocative speech last Thursday night. Spencer, the director of the website Jihad Watch, spoke as part of "Islamofascism Awareness Week" and presented a simple but highly controversial argument: that Islam is a religion of violence and oppression. Citing passages in the Quran, Spencer suggested that the Islamic faith inherently condones misogyny, abuse of homosexuals, authoritarianism and the killing of non-believers. "I do not believe that Islam at its core is a peaceful religion," he said.

But while there is little debate that segments of the Quran could be read as a justification for bigotry or abuse, what Spencer left unsaid - a glaring omission that many in the audience later commented on - is that the overwhelming majority of Muslims don't actually follow the passages that he cited.

Perhaps not, but all of the people setting off bombs, cutting off heads, or otherwise doing violence, point to those passages as the reason they are doing what they are doing, and they say that Islam requires everyone to do the same thing, and the Muslims that do not follow those passages do not stand up and show the Jihadists where their interpretation is wrong. To the contrary, the clerics being sent to new mosques in western country encourage the youth to "join the Jihad", and there is plenty of literatire encouraging violence for them to read.
Throughout the Islamic world, there is little support for the notion that apostates should be killed,
There are news reports of it being done in many countries, and Sharia law calls for it.
that non-Muslims should be taxed separately
Even in Iraq the militias have insisted on Christians paying the Jizya or they would be killed.
or that women should be mistreated.
A woman cannot drive a car, or even leave the house unless accompanied by a father, husband, or brother, in Saudia Arabia.
As with all religions, most adherents of Islam view the Quran as flexible and open to interpretation. While certain passages are embraced and followed carefully, others are tacitly rejected and ignored.... Few would disagree, for instance, that the Bible contains many of the same intolerant elements that the Quran does. The Old and New Testaments include passages that could be read as condoning the objectification of women, violence towards non-believers, and the abuse of slaves. Take Samuel I 15:2-3: "Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys."
It does not say kill every unbeliever, just the Amalekites. And who were the Amalekites? The Amalekites attacked the Israelites without apparent provocation as they were travelling during the Exodus (Ex 17:8). "When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and cut off all who were lagging behind" (Dt 25:17-18). They later attacked Israel during the time of the Judges (Jdg 3:13) and often raided the Israelites' land after they had planted crops, leaving them with nothing (Jdg 6:2-5). God punished the Amalekites by ordering Saul to destroy them (1 Sam 15:2-3) - over 300 years after they had first attacked Israel.
Or Ephesians 5:22-23: "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife..."
It says the wive should be submissive to their husbands, but it does not say that the husband should beat his wife, as Qur'an 4:34 says Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.
Or read Titus 2:9-10, in which it is stated that "slaves (are) to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them..."
The verse does not encourage slavery, but do you feel that slaves or other servants should not be respectful to their masters or employers? Let us look at the entire chapter of Titus 2:
1You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.
2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
4 Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children,
5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.
7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness
8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,
10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.
12 It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
... Although Spencer was quick to paint Islam as flawed and incompatible with international human rights norms, the reality is much more nuanced, as events in the Muslim world over the past few years illustrate. Consider the following examples: a prominent Saudi cleric, and a former mentor to Osama bin Laden, recently argued that Islam rejects all forms of violence "regardless of what justification is given";
I m sure the nearly 3000 people killed when the buildings came down will take solace in that
the ruling Islamist party in Turkey has passed the greatest expansion of women's rights in almost a century;
And they are backtracking on them now that they have an Islamist as Prime Minister
Iranian citizens came out in huge numbers after 9/11 to protest against terrorism;
And gays are hanged regularly, and several women are in prison awaiting a death by stoning for extra marital affairs.
the Muslim king of Morocco has allowed women to become imams;
When these Imams take the Hajj are they terated as Imams in Saudia Arabia?
and Egypt's largest opposition political party, the Muslim Brotherhood, openly affirms pluralism, democracy and welfare for women.
It also says it is peaceful, yet it has spawned several terrorist organizations.
The ways in which Islam, with roughly 1.6 billion adherents, is understood and practiced vary dramatically across different cultures and regions. Citing harshly-worded parts of the Quran to suggest that Islam is inherently a religion of violence and oppression, as Spencer did in his speech, dehumanizes its followers and irresponsibly ignores the vast majority of Muslims who do not subscribe to such an interpretation. Regrettably, rather than building ties and commonalities between people of different faiths and backgrounds, Spencer used his appearance here at Brown to sharpen divisions and to perpetuate false and destructive stereotypes.
Spencer also suggests five ways to end “Islamophobia,” Muslims should:

  1. Focus their indignation on Muslims committing violent acts in the name of Islam, not on non-Muslims reporting on those acts.
  2. Renounce definitively not just "terrorism," but any intention to replace the U.S. Constitution (or the constitutions of any non-Muslim state) with Sharia even by peaceful means.
  3. Teach Muslims the imperative of coexisting peacefully as equals with non-Muslims on an indefinite basis.
  4. Begin comprehensive international programs in mosques all over the world to teach against the ideas of violent jihad and Islamic supremacism.
  5. Actively work with Western law enforcement officials to identify and apprehend jihadists within Western Muslim communities.

Funeral protesters

Baltimore Sun reported The brokenhearted father of a Marine killed in Iraq won a long-shot legal fight today after a federal jury in Baltimore awarded him nearly $11 million in a verdict against members of a Kansas church who hoisted anti-gay placards at his son's Westminster funeral.
Fantastic news. I hope this stops them.
The jury's announcement 24 hours after deliberations first began was met with tears and hugs from the family and supporters of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, whose March 2006 funeral was protested by members of the Westboro Baptist Church with signs including "Thank God for dead soldiers."

Snyder's father, Albert, won on every count of his complaint, as well as $2.9 million for compensatory damages and $8 million for punitive damages.

Dress as Muslims

The Sun reported A school was yesterday accused of MAKING teachers dress up as Asians for a day – to celebrate a Muslim festival.
Will the teachers be required to dress as Jews for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, and as Christians for Christmas or Easter?
Kids at the 257-pupil primary have also been told to don ethnic garb even though most are Christians.
Same question.
The morning assembly will be open to all parents – but dads are BARRED from a women-only party in the afternoon because Muslim husbands object to wives mixing with other men.
Then tell them to keep their wives home.
Just two members of staff – a part-time teacher and a teaching assistant – are Muslim.
Are they married, and are their male teachers in the school?
Yesterday a relative of one of the 39 others said: “Staff have got to go along with it – or let’s face it, they would be branded racist.
Why? Islam is a religion, not a race.
“Who would put their job on the line? They have been told they have to embrace the day to show their diversity. But they are not all happy.” The day aims to belatedly mark Eid, the end of Ramadan. Sally Bloomer, head of Rufford primary school in Lye, West Midlands, insisted: “I have not heard of any complaints.
I suspect she may hear of some now. here is the school's website.
“It’s all part of a diversity project to promote multi-culturalism.”

Clinton Screws Up

In the Democratic Debate, Clinton screwed up in an exchange with Chris Dodd about giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens:

Clinton said Possibility having an accident that harms themselves or others

Does having drivers license mean they will not have an accident?
What are we going to do with all of these illegal immigrants
How about deportation.
What is the identification. If somebody runs into you today who is an undocumented worker
What does having a drivers license have to do with it. If they have insurance, get that info and file a claim, nd then deport them. If they do not have insurance, deport them, and file a claim with your own insurance company. Having an address on a drivers license for wherever the migrant worker lived when he got the license is not going to help you track him down and get him to pay for the damages he caused.

Associate terrorism with Islam

Kuwait News Agency reported Head of the Green Party and National Spokesman Alexander Van der Bellen said he is against the attempts of some bodies to associate Islam with terrorism.
Who is he referring to? Would it be the terror groups that take names like "Islamic Jihad" or "the Party of Allah" (Hizballah) or "The Islamic Resistance Movement" (Hamas). Would it be the terrorists that quote from the Qur'an that draw the association?
Der Bellen told KUNA that it is in everybody's favor that 400,000 Moslems living in Austria do not turn into hostages as a result of the acts of a few extremist Moslems in the country.
Particularly it is in the interest of the 400,000 that have an opportunity to live in this Western country, and who prefer to live there rather than under an oppressive Middle Eastern government that they make sure to eject the clerics who seek to radicalize their youth.

Post-Islamism

Ali Eteraz opined on Guardian The future of Islamic reform lies with post-Islamism - a recognition that politics rather than religion provides for welfare in this life.
Actually neither politics or religion is the answer for this life. Politics is a better solution than violence to making decisions, but it is not an end in itself. The way to improve your position in this life is through personal initiative, And religion is not a way to improve your position in this like, it is to prepare you for the next life.
There is universal consensus that Muslim dictatorships, supported by the west, are the root of evil.
A root, not the root.
They destroy political culture, kill extra-judicially and their repression foments violence.

The primary opponents of these dictators are the populist Islamists. They want to vote; except after voting they want to appoint an extra-constitutional body of clerics to strike down legislation they do not approve of.
What they do not realize is that the clerics will impose an even worse dictatorship on them. Witness life under the Taliban.
Faced with only these two options - dictators or elected theocrats
Why are these the only two options.
- in Muslim majority countries, the usual reaction by westerners is to throw their hands up in frustration and opt for apathy or give into a militaristic pessimism. These are both uninformed reactions. They fail to take into account the future of Islamic reform, which lies with the emergence of a post-Islamist political order in the Muslim majority world.

Post-Islamism is at hand because a new crop of Muslims have figured out how to reconcile liberal democracy with Islam. Upon doing so, they give up on creating religious organisations devoted to "da'wa" (Islamic evangelism) and move towards becoming organised as civil-political parties with platforms based on equality and pluralism. Incidentally, part of the credit for the popularity of post-Islamism goes to the theocratic Islamists. In their eagerness to merge religion with politics, they thought the result would be religion. Instead, the devout middle class realised that religion alone could not provide for their social concerns. Post-Islamism, thus, is the recognition that while religion may provide salvation in the next life, politics is what provides for welfare in this one. It is, at its barest, politics subsuming religion.

Republicans Pin Terror on Islam, Democrats Don’t

CAIR whined A divide is emerging on the presidential campaign trail over battling terrorists: how exactly to label the fight. While Democrats tend to talk about terrorism in general, Republicans increasingly pin the threat directly on Islam.
Which says if you want to be safe, elect the Republicans that know what the source of the problem is.
All the major Republican candidates regularly weave some form of the phrase "Islamic extremism" into their stump speeches. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has taken the rhetoric to a new level, running a television advertisement about "this century's nightmare, jihadism." Democratic candidates generally don't emphasize linking Islam and terrorism. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton talks more of "global terrorism," while Sen. Barack Obama refers to "stateless terrorism."
At least they know it exists, even though they are clueless on where it comes from.
"In four Democratic debates, not a single Democratic candidate said the word 'Islamic terrorism,'" former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said at a Republican debate. "Now that is taking a political correctness to extremes." Those who like the Republican candidates' choice of language say it reflects the reality of who threatens America the most. "Everybody ought to call an ace an ace," says Jim Gorsh, a 62-year-old retiree who heard Mr. Romney speak in Clinton, Iowa, earlier this month. Others, including some Arab-American groups, say the constant references to Islamic terrorists, even if meant to refer only to a single radical strand of Islam,
It is not restricted to on strand. There are both Shia and Sunni terrorists.
may end up tarring the entire religion. After a group of conservative academics declared last week "Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week," David Halperin, a senior vice president at the Democratic-leaning think tank Center for American Progress, criticized the effort. "To continue to harp on the idea that Islamo-fascism is the source of terrorism is to suggest that all Muslims are terrorists," Mr. Halperin said.
No, but most terrorists are Muslims.

Rulebook for mosques to drive out extremists

Guardian Unlimited reported The first attempt by British Muslims to set out the core standards and constitutions for Britain's 1,350-plus mosques and Islamic centres has been drawn up by a new body representing four leading groups. The move was welcomed by Hazel Blears, the communities secretary. Ministers have often complained that there is a lack of oversight of mosques, and hope the proposals for standardised rules on governance and leadership could help to drive out extremism.... The proposals have been drawn up by the year-old Mosques and Imams National Advisory Body (MINAB), set up by four leading Muslim groups in Britain - the Al-Khoei Foundation, the British Muslim Forum, the Muslim Association of Britain and the Muslim Council of Britain.... It also proposes improving access of women and young people to mosques. The new body, according to its constitution, would also provide advice on the suitability of imams and scholars coming from abroad.
It's about time. I wish them luck.

We do not need a health system like Britain's

And by the end of the decade 200,000 "health tourists" will fly as far as Malaysa and South Africa for major surgery to avoid long waiting lists and the rising threat of superbugs, according to a new report.
We do not need a health system like Britain's.
The first survey of Britons opting for treatment overseas shows that fears of hospital infections and frustration of often waiting months for operations are fuelling the increasing trend.

Patients needing major heart surgery, hip operations and cataracts are using the internet to book operations to be carried out thousands of miles away.

Expert presents Islam as tolerant

Centredaily. reported “Muslims are obliged. ... You have to respect people of other faith,”
Just don't make friends with them.. And if they are Christians and Jews they must be subjugated and pay protection money. Members of other faiths are just killed.
Noorbaksh said. Radical elements in Muslim countries — such as those that promote female genital mutilation or ban women from driving — do not stem from the religion itself, Noorbaksh said.
Rights of a woman 1/2 that of a man, Four male witnesses to prove a woman was raped, A man may beat his wife, etc.
“Of course, we have a lot of authoritarian regimes in the Islamic world,” he said. “But it doesn’t have anything to do with the faith.”
I wonder why that is.
He went on to tweak the U.S. government over its relationships with a number of those regimes. Some radical Muslims develop extreme ideologies because they’ve felt left out of the political process, Noorbaksh said.
And what should we do about that? Replace those authoritarian regimes with Wahabi theocracies?
Further addressing the U.S., he said some political leaders here began looking for a new perceived threat after the Soviet Union collapsed. “For them, luckily, of course, they got it — and that was Islam,” Noorbaksh said. “Islam substituted (for) the former Soviet Union.”
Which was having its own problems with Chechen Islamists.
Terms such as “Islamo- Fascism” reflect a mentality “nourished mostly by a fear factor,” he said.
Which is the purpose of terrorism.
He said terrorists make up far less than even 1 percent of the global Muslim population of 1.3 billion.
So there are less than 13 million Muslim terrorists. That's reassuring

Shoot first

The Raw Story= reported Burglars in the United States could once sue homeowners if they were shot
That is sheer stupidity.
, but now a growing number of states have made it legal to shoot to kill when somebody breaks into a house. John Woodson, 46, found that out last week when he ambled into Dennis Baker's open garage in a Dallas suburb. A surveillance video showed the robber strolling inside, hands in his pockets.
Was he that nonchalant, or did he have a weapon in his pockets.
From the shadows, Baker opened fire and killed Woodson. "I just had to protect myself and that was it," Baker told reporters despite the fact Woodson had not tried to enter the bedroom near the garage where Baker had been sleeping.
He did noy belong anywhere in the house. And what makes you think he would not have gone there?
The incident made national headlines since it was Baker's parrot that gave the alarm when it innocently squawked "good morning" at the intruder.

But Woodson's death seemed anecdotal compared to another Dallas resident who a few days earlier had killed his second robber in three weeks inside his home.
Hopefully the word is getting out amongst the robbers.
Police are investigating both cases, but it is unlikely charges will be filed. Texas recently passed a law branding anybody breaking into a home or car as a real threat of injury or death to its occupants.

In contrast with traditional self-defense laws, this measure does not require that a person who opens fire on a burglar be able to prove that he or she was physically threatened, that force was used only as a last resort and that the victim had first tried to hide.
Why should you have to hide when someone breaks into your house.
Florida was the first state to adopt in 2005 a law that was dubbed "Stand your ground" or "Shoot first." But now they have proliferated largely under pressure from the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), the main weapons lobby in the United States.
Some of the pressure is coming from people tired of people breaking into their houses.
Today 19 out of 50 US states, mostly in the south and the central regions of the country, have this kind of laws, and similar legislation is pending in about a dozen others.

iPhone

Apple refusing to accept cash for iPhone, limits 'em to two per person - Engadget reported Apple has stiffened up the requirements to pick up a new iPhone shortly after announcing that 250,000 or so of the 1.4 million it sold in Q4 went to unlockers.
Why should Apple care? It is AT&T that wants captive customers. Apple may have to pretend to lock them, to get AT&T interested, but it is in Apple's interest to sell as many of the things as it can.
In an admittedly intriguing move, Apple has decided that it will "no longer accept cash for iPhone purchases," and moreover, each individual will only be allowed to buy two (on plastic, of course) in an effort to "stop people from reselling them."
Why should they care? If they can bring higher prices on eBay, why does Apple not just start selling them on eBay?
More specifically, spokeswoman Natalie Kerris stated that the company is "requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers," so don't even bother bringing the greenbacks if you're lookin' to grab an iPhone from Apple.
