Donors Asked To Give for Two

WaPo reported The fundraising machine Sen. Barack Obama is relying on to overwhelm Sen. John McCain this fall has shown signs of wear in recent weeks, as Internet contributions have slowed and efforts to recruit top donors to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign have been beset by lingering tensions.

And most of the donations have come from the radical left, that is disappointed to see Obama abandon them in his move to the center.

Dems searching their souls on drilling

Politico.com reported Although Senate Democrats are slowly easing away from opposition to offshore drilling, it’s clear that the majority party is not giving it away for nothing. One idea floated by Reid would require that whatever oil is drilled in newly opened areas would need to be sold in the United States.
Because of transportation costs I suspect it would be anyway.
Democrats also want any compromise plan to include investments in clean and renewable energies,
If that includes nuclear, I agree. The rest does not offer that much promise.
a crackdown on oil speculators and proof that the oil and gas companies are fully utilizing land that is already leased for exploration. “If they were showing in good faith that they were drilling on some of the 68 million acres they have now, it might change some of our attitudes,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.).
If there was oil on them I suspect they would be drilling. How about allowing them to swap lease space they currently have with space in ANWAR, at 1 million acres for 1 thousand acres.
Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) said that he was open to drilling in new areas but opposed to “offshore drilling if there is any environmental impact.” Durbin reiterated the call for oil companies to drill in areas covered by existing leases first,
Even if there is no oil there?
but then added: “Beyond that, if there is a suggestion of some new area to go into, I’ll look at it.”
ANWAR.
Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), fresh from his GI Bill victory, said that he is now making energy a major priority. “We need to look at all our assets,” he said, suggesting a large package including expanded offshore drilling, alternative energy, nuclear power and technology to make coal cleaner.
Alternative energy does not offer much but I agree on the other three. And by the time we get a bunch of nuvclear plants up, we should be able to perfect electric cars.

Father Killed Daughter to Honor Family

MyFox Atlanta reported A Clayton County man was behind bars Sunday, accused of killing his own daughter. Police said the father was angry because he felt his daughter was disgracing the family.
And so the father kills his daughter. Does that not dishonor the family more than a divorce would.
Investigators said 54-year-old Chaudhry Rashad was so outraged at his daughter, Sandela Kanwal, and her plans for divorce that he killed her after a heated argument at the family's home. Investigators said Rashad confessed to strangling the 25-year-old woman.
Rather than an honor killing we should refer to it as a dishonor killing.
As Robert Spencer indicated: CNN tries to blame it on domestic violence "My immediate reaction was that this is an anomaly in the South Asian community," Ajay Nair, associate dean of multicultural affairs at Columbia University, told CNN on Tuesday. "Most South Asian-American families enjoy wonderful relationships within their families."
Except when the women don't go along with arranged marriages
"I think there's ways that we can rationalize it and make sense of it, particularly in thinking about new immigrant communities in the U.S. and thinking about some of the struggles that they face and the generation gap and the cultural differences that children do face," he said. "I think there are some issues there, but by and large, this isn't a rampant problem within South Asian communities. What is a problem, I think, is domestic violence, and that cuts across all communities."
What other communities have arranged marriages, and kill women who will not go along with them?

Cjicago Tribune talks about The problem of "honor killings" and other domestic violence after failed arranged marriages is spreading as some culturally rigid Pakistani and Indian immigrants settle in different parts of the country, said Najma Adam, a sociology professor at Governors State University in suburban Chicago who co-wrote a 2007 study on the issue.
Are these immigrants usually Christian? Jewish? Buddists? Hindus? Or perhaps Muslims?
Such cultural unions serve as social contracts among South Asians and other communities, where a marriage agreement is more about families joining forces than about two people finding love—akin to the arranged marriages of European royalty, she said.
Name some times when arranged marriages of European royalty resulted in the woman being killed because she wanted a divorce.
When the marriage breaks down, both families are dishonored—especially the bride's, she said.
No, the dishonor comes when the bride is killed.
Subsequently, "family members, parents, are the ones who end up either taking their life or further abusing them," Adam said. In arranged marriages, "even if [the husband] is beating her and very abusive toward her, because of the very strong patriarchal underpinnings, she is the one who has committed the crime by leaving him or by wanting out of this relationship," Adam said.
Is that because the rights of a woman are 1/2 that of a man? Qur'an 2:282 says ... Let his guardian dictate faithfully, and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her.

On Beck, Zuhdi Jasser dismissed it as a "pre-Islamic" practice.
Well, this is -- you know, you`re trying to understand the pathology of a Neanderthal that basically comes out of the mountains of Pakistan and has a pre-Islamic mentality of -- where the sexuality of his family and the purity of his daughter is much more important to him than actually murdering her and her life. And this is -- actually, it has nothing to do with Islam. This is a tribal, medieval mentality that is seen in tribes in Pakistan and India, and often is not even seen in Islamic communities. It`s basically part of the ignorance of the tribal community.
then why did Jordan's Parliament reject on Islamic grounds attempts to stiffen sentences for honor killings.

Did Hillary submarine Obama on FISA reform?

Hot Air reported An interesting shift happened during the run-up to the final vote on the FISA reform bill this afternoon. Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton voted in favor of amendments that would have stripped telecom immunity from the House bill up for a vote today. Neither amendment came close to passage, and the Senate next moved to a cloture vote — which allowed one last opportunity for a filibuster. Originally, both Hillary and Obama voted for cloture. However, Hillary changed her vote before the tally closed, opposing cloture and supporting a filibuster. A little later, she voted against the FISA reform — only one of 28 votes against — while Obama voted for its passage. Has Hillary decided to woo the netroots in a bid to resurrect her presidential ambitions for 2008? Obama hasn’t technically clinched the nomination yet.
Of course that is what she is trying to do.
The superdelegates can still change their minds before the first vote at the Denver convention. Moreover, Obama hasn’t exactly broken a leg in a rush to assist her in retiring her campaign debt, either.
She does not care about the campaign debt. She wants power, and that is in the White House, not the Senate, and not Number One Observatory Circle (the Vice President's Residence).
Could she have calculated her actions today in order to generate a grass-roots effort to get the nomination? If so, could it work?
It could, and if not she has other things to try.
Update: Some commenters wonder whether this was an attempt to force her way onto the ticket as VP.
No chance. She does not want the VP slot; she is going for the top slot.
In fact, I think she just made that option even less likely than before. Candidates do not choose running mates who make a point of showing them up, as Hillary just did today.

Atheist soldier sues Army for 'unconstitutional' discrimination

CNN.com reported Army Spc. Jeremy Hall said he met some atheists who suggested he read the Bible again. After doing so, he said he had so many unanswered questions that he decided to become an atheist.
I guess that is easier than seeking answers to his questions.
His sudden lack of faith, he said, cost him his military career and put his life at risk. Hall said his life was threatened by other troops and the military assigned a full-time bodyguard to protect him out of fear for his safety.... Hall said there is a pattern of discrimination against non-Christians in the military. Two years ago on Thanksgiving Day, after refusing to pray at his table, Hall said he was told to go sit somewhere else.
Was that official military policy, or did the others at the table just not appreciate his attitude.
In another incident, when he was nearly killed during an attack on his Humvee, he said another soldier asked him, "Do you believe in Jesus now?"
A very good question.
Hall isn't seeking compensation in his lawsuit -- just the guarantee of religious freedom in the military. Eventually, Hall was sent home early from Iraq and later returned to Fort Riley in Junction City, Kansas, to complete his tour of duty.
Send him back.
He also said he missed out on promotions because he is an atheist. "I was told because I can't put my personal beliefs aside and pray with troops I wouldn't make a good leader," Hall said.
Should troops in danger tat want to pray be force to have a leader that disparages faith?
Gateway Pundit blogged Well, it's been at least two months. It must be time to drag out the mainstream media's favorite atheist soldier- Jeremy Hall.

Macsmind blogged Gateway Pundit of course nails the true motive behind this nonsense. Atheists are in themselves a religion that seek to remove not just any religion, but specifically Christianity from American life.

Racial?????

Dallas City Hall Blog reported A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon. County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts. Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office. Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole." That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.
Do these two idiots not know what the term "black hole" means?
Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."
Precisely.
Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.
Then why don't we have a YouTube clip of this stupidity
Michelle Malkin blogged Next on the p.c. forbidden list: black box, Blackberry, blackjack, and blackout. Oh, and all black Crayola crayons, which shall henceforth be called “African-American.”

Darleen Click blogged Scientists - unconscious racists... Let’s not be niggardly with our praise of these brave fellows.

Neo commented If brains were dynamite, both ot these two asshats couldn’t blow their noses.

Left wing John Cole blogged This pains me, but Michelle Malkin is right, and this is the dumbest damned thing I have heard in a long, long time.

Penn C'06 blogged This is just getting silly. There’s a reason it’s called a black hole. Light can simply not exist, the black hole obfuscates all properties of matter except for mass. There’s a reason for color-centric names like blackboard and white-out: they make sense. I suppose we could call a blackboard a chalkboard, but is calling it a blackboard racially insensitive to blacks? Wouldn’t it be more offensive if we called a blackboard an African-American board, formally calling out this coincidence and creating an even more insulting one?

Van Helsing blogged This is just a hint of the insanity we can expect if PC totalitarians are successful at installing Barack Obama in the White House — which may have to be renamed in the interests of preventing white supremacism.

JammieWearingFool blogged Oh brother. Talk about the language losing all meaning.

Flip blogged An Object So Dense, Not Even Sanity Can Escape.

John Wiley Price, you are the black sheep among your fellow Commissioners and your involvement in public affairs constitutes a black mark on Dallas County and a black eye to county taxpayers.

Ace blogged Term "Black Hole" Now Racially Insensitive. "Red giant" is deemed iffy, but go right ahead with "white dwarf."

Rod Dreher blogged Score two for the Idiot-American community.

Obama and volunteering: Forced servitude in America?

Jonah Goldberg wrote in Los Angeles Times reported There's a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery.
There is merit to what Jonah says, but the left does not think so.
For those who don't remember, the 13th Amendment says: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime ... shall exist within the United States." I guess in Obama's mind it must be a crime to be born or to go to college.
No, it is just that the taxes he plans to raise will cut productivity so much he needs to get more people volunteering to work for free.
In his speech on national service Wednesday at the University of Colorado, Obama promised that as president he would "set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year."
Being a volunteer is wonderful. But it has to be free will. Forced service is very close to slavery.
Alex Knapp blogged Look, if a kid wants to spend 50 hours a year volunteering at a soup kitchen or building a house for habitat for humanity, then more power to him. If she wants to spend that time playing video games or basketball, or even *gasp!* holding down a part-time job well, that’s her choice, too. The point of America is that you got to make the choice about what you want to do with your life, not have some bureaucrat decide for you.

Uncle Jimbo blogged Barry O got some pub recently for wanting to require kids to do mandatory public service in high school. This is a fundamentally fuzzy-headed liberal idea that approaches social problems with socialist solutions. Sure it would be nice if youngsters spent some time doing good deeds in their communities, but requiring them to do so as part of school is a type of education I don't want the educrats in charge of.

Save D.C.'s Vouchers

WaPo reported Better schools. Higher scores. And satisfied parents.
And a very ticked off teachers union that can't stand the competition.
That's the record of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. It is helping us keep our promise to leave no child behind in America. If Congress is thinking of breaking this promise, the nation deserves to know the story.
They certainly won't get the truth.
Signed into law by President Bush four years ago, the program is the first to provide federally funded education vouchers to students. It awards up to $7,500 per child for tuition, transportation and fees; in 2007-08 it enabled 1,900 students from the underperforming Washington public school system -- the highest total yet -- to attend the private or religious schools of their choice.
If the teachers unions would just encourage their schools to improve, they could compete with the private and religious schools

Illegal immigrants face threat of no college

USATODAY reported Some states are making it harder for illegal immigrants to attend college by denying in-state tuition benefits or banning undocumented students. In the past two years, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma have refused in-state tuition benefits to students who entered the USA illegally with their parents but grew up and went to school in the state.
But they don't live legally in the state, so why should they get in state tuition rates.
That represents a reversal from earlier this decade, when 10 states passed laws allowing in-state rates for such students. This summer, South Carolina became the first state to bar undocumented students from all public colleges and universities.
Can't they go to college in their home country?
North Carolina's community colleges in May ordered its 58 campuses to stop enrolling undocumented students after the state attorney general said admitting them may violate federal law. "The new trend is to kick illegal aliens out of college altogether," says William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, which opposes taxpayer subsidies for undocumented immigrants.
I also oppose taxpayer subsdoes for undocumented immigrants.

Clinton's Convention Role

WSJ reported Hillary Clinton won a hefty 1,600 convention delegates in six months of primaries. A big question now is whether to let them vote at the Democratic convention.
In other words can the Democratic party handle democracy.
High on the list of matters that Sen. Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama are negotiating as her campaign closes down is whether and how her name is put into nomination at the August convention in Denver, said party activists in both camps.
And is Obama willing to take the chance that a bunch of super delegates, unhappy at how he has abandoned the extreme left in his rush to the center, may switch and support Hillary.

Blogger admits Hawaii birth certificate forgery, subverting Obama claims

israelinsider reported Jay McKinnon, a self-described Department of Homeland Security-trained document specialist, has implicated himself in the production of fake Hawaii birth certificate images similar to the one endorsed as genuine by the Barack Obama campaign, and appearing on the same Daily Kos blog entry where the supposedly authentic document appears.

Why doesn't the Obama campaign just release the real certificate? Is it because it would show Obama is not eligible to be president?

Pamela blogged Atlas Tech Expert Declares Obama Birth Certificate Forgery

Gina Cobb blogged If Barack Obama does not produce his original, paper birth certificate within one week, he should be presumed not to be eligible for the presidency of the United States of America.

Macranger blogged Here’s the deal, Obama, himself, produces a BIRTH CERTIFICATE. An official from the State of Hawaii Department of Vital Statistics goes on the news and announces it is valid. Until then, don’t put your Campaign hat away yet Hillary.

Doug Ross blogged I had written a few days ago, having found what appears to be a seal and a signature block, that the issue might be resolved. But, as experts have ably pointed out, it may not be. But... I would still caution all who jump on the Obama-slash-bogus birth certificate bandwagon that this may yet turn out to be a trap or dead-end. Obama's campaign could produce a real birth certificate and blame the scan on another "ill-informed staffer"... who is then thrown under the bus.*

AJ Strata believes it is valid.

Barack Obama's policy switches are giving the Left whiplash

Times Online reported Change, it turns out, wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.
Just words.
Having campaigned for the past year as the agent of transformation, the man who would lead an historic shift in America's political direction, Barack Obama is discovering that there is quite a lot he likes about the way things are.
The only change he wants is t live at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Since securing the Democratic nomination a few weeks ago, the only change coming from the Illinois senator has been in what he seems to stand for.
That's politics.
... If next week he named Dick Cheney as his running-mate and revealed that he spends his spare time drilling for oil in wildlife habitats, the only surprise would be that it took him so long.
That was supposed to be a secret until after the Convention in August.
... A whimper of pain has gone up from the base. Those who really believed in the Audacity of Hope now fear a Timidity of Despair. Thousands of Obama supporters have signed a petition on his website begging him to reconsider his position on the illegal wiretaps - a seemingly minor campaign issue, but one that carries great talismanic symbolism for civil libertarians.
The real question is after all of these flip flops will they continue donating on the internet at the same levels he is used to.

CNN poll shows Obama going backwards with Democrats

Hot Air reported How’s that backflip to the center working for Barack Obama?
Driving the far left crazy.
According to CNN polling, he has managed to lose Democrats rather than heal the party after an often-bitter primary.
The radical left thought he meant it, rather than just pandering to get their votes.
Hillary Clinton has gained eight points in the poll since conceding to Obama,
She may take him in Denver after all.
and more of her supporters now say they will stay home rather than cast a vote for the man who bested their favorite
Sounds good to me.

Kneel down and pray to Allah

Mail Online reported Two schoolboys were given detention after refusing to kneel down and 'pray to Allah' during a religious education lesson.
Do they also make Muslim children pray to God in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and say a Jewish prayer?
Parents were outraged that the two boys from year seven (11 to 12-year-olds) were punished for not wanting to take part in the practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped.
I can understand why they were upset.
They said forcing their children to take part in the exercise at Alsager High School, near Stoke-on-Trent - which included wearing Muslim headgear - was a breach of their human rights...."Then two boys got detention and all the other children missed their refreshment break because of the teacher.
Isn't that terrible. They missed their snack. Was it Holy Communion?
"Not only was it forced upon them, my daughter was told off for not doing it right. "They'd never done it before and they were supposed to do it in another language."
And saying that prayer, which is called the Shahada, the Muslim profession of faith that "there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah", is what makes them a Muslim.
.... "But if Muslims were asked to go to church on Sunday and take Holy Communion there would be war."
Also from Catholics that don't like non-Cathlics to partake in it even if they are Christian.
Baron Bodissey blogged One of the characteristics of Multiculturalism in the West is that tolerance flows in only one direction.... The mandatory Multicultural disclaimers: I’m not racist. I support diversity in schools and the workplace. Some of my best friends are Muslims.

Matthew Yglesias is worried

Matthew Yglesias blogged I don't think anyone can seriously dispute that the current President of the United States violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or any number of legal commitments to refrain from torture.

I dispute both.

He did not violate FISA, which affects surveillance between "foreign powers" and "agents of foreign powers". The communication he intercepted were between people outside the US, but the communication channels went through the US, and they were communications by enemies of the US in a time of war after we were attached on 9/11.

And waterboarding is not torture. If you want to see torture see what Saddam did to his own citizens.

Christopher Hitchens is an idiot

Christopher Hitchens submitted himself to waterboarding for an article in Vanity Fair. He reported You may have read by now the official lie about this treatment, which is that it “simulates” the feeling of drowning. This is not the case. You feel that you are drowning because you are drowning—or, rather, being drowned,
No you are not. Your lungs are higher than the heart. No water can make it up into them.
albeit slowly and under controlled conditions and at the mercy (or otherwise) of those who are applying the pressure. The “board” is the instrument, not the method. You are not being boarded. You are being watered.
Maybe it will help you to grow. It works for plants.
This was very rapidly brought home to me when, on top of the hood, which still admitted a few flashes of random and worrying strobe light to my vision, three layers of enveloping towel were added.... if waterboarding does not constitute torture, then there is no such thing as torture.
You have not got a clue what real torture is.
see-dubya blogged He seems to have recovered pretty well. Occasionally has trouble sleeping. Gee, I sure do hope Khaled Sheikh Mohammed isn’t having any of those lingering after-effects. I’d be pretty sad to learn he wasn’t sleeping soundly.

weasel blogged Torture is any experience so horrible that no-one would consider trying it out simply for the purpose of writing a Vanity Fair article about what it’s like.

Allahpundit blogged The quote from Malcolm Nance suggests that by waterboarding Al Qaeda we’ve only ended up teaching them how to resist the practice, but that’s a risk you absorb whenever you introduce a new weapon or tactic. And given the fact that the practice is reportedly no longer used and was never used all that much to begin with, how big of a risk is it?

Freddy Gray blogged Self-inflicted waterboarding is no joke. Participants risk the following side-effects: a severe increase in self-righteousness and self-pity; a tendency to write really boring copy; and heavy fits of moral outrage.

Phillip Carter blogged Stupid Is As Hitchens Does.
