Defame Islam, get sued

Yahoo! News reported The Muslim world has created a battle plan to defend its religion from political cartoonists and bigots.

They are running out of people willing to blow themselves up, so they are resorting to something we have a surplus of -- lawyers.

... Though the legal measures being considered have not been spelled out, the idea pits many Muslims against principles of freedom of speech enshrined in the constitutions of numerous Western governments.

I drew those strips a few months ago, and in my typical careless way I didn’t realize they would be running around Easter time. Oops.

I am sure it was not intentional. NOT!!!

Will Jews and Christians be rioting in the streets? How many embassies and other buildings will be burned? How many people will be killed, and how many death threats will the cartoonist receive? Probably none, because Jews believe what they read in the Torah, and Christians know that Jesus is still the Son of God, and neither were harmed by the cartoons.

As you might imagine, I got a lot of e-mail about this strip. Comments were about evenly divided between people who are deeply offended and people who think it was my best work yet. Interestingly, the people most amused often described themselves as religious, and those offended often noted that they were not especially religious.

My favorite rhetorical question, which I received an alarming number of times, was “Why don’t you mock Mohammed next? Huh? Why not?”

Well, aside from the blindingly obvious reason that I prefer life over death,

What about life AFTER death.

I didn’t realize I was making fun of Christianity this week.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you.

It’s a standard cartoon practice to take well-known historical or fictional stories and put other characters in those roles. I did the same thing with The Wizard of Oz, and no one thought I was insulting Dorothy.

I am not aware of a major faith in which Dorothy is a key figure.

Interfaith harmony

Xinhua reported Indonesia on Friday warned Dutch lawmaker not to release an anti-Islam film which could destroy interfaith harmony, the country foreign ministry said here.

ow much Interfaith Harmony do you have now? Are other faiths permitted to build churches, and preach their faith to anyone that will listen? If a Muslim wants to leave Islam and become a Jew or a Christian or a Hindu or a Buddhist, can he?

Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, who heads the Freedom Party, will release his short film this month, which he says will depict the Koran as a 'fascist book', despite mounting protests and a disagreement from the Dutch government.

And a Dutch government that pretends to allow freedom of speech and thought, but only if not threatened with violence.

Indonesian foreign ministry and religious leaders from all religions have opposed the release, saying it could trigger backlash from Muslims.

A bachlash? From the "Religion of Peace"?????

In 2006, protesting and rioting erupted in many Muslim countries, including the biggest Muslim country, Indonesia, after a publication of the cartoon of Prophet Mohammad with a turban resembling a bomb in a Danish newspaper. It killed more than 50 people and destroyed three Danish embassies.

And all because of a stupid cartoon.

"The Dutch government has failed to convince Wilders not to release the film for the risks of backlash should the film to be released," spokesman of the ministry Kristianto Legowo told a press conference at the ministry office. The spokesman said that the film would hamper the interfaith dialogue that has been actively promoted by Indonesia and other countries.

Was that interfaith dialogue hurt by 9/11? Bali bombings? 7/7 in London? What about the 10721 terrorist attacks since 9/11

"(The film) will be an obstacle to attempts that we and other countries have initiated. We do not want this to occur,"

Then tell the Muslims to behave in a civilized fashion.

Forced marriages

Times Online Schools in areas feared to have high rates of forced marriage are refusing to display posters on the issue because they are too hard-hitting, according to a government report.

The problem is a serious one. Do yu think if the posters are more acceptable, they will stop doing what is wrong?

Headteachers are unwilling to put up the posters for fear that they might offend some parents.

Only the parents forcing their children to go to some foreign country and marry a relative that the parents selected are likely to be offended, and they are doing someting which should be stopped.

The disclosure came in findings from the Department for Children, Schools and Families showing that 2,089 pupils were absent from school without explanation in 14 areas of England believed to have a high incidence of forced marriage.... “Some schools in Leeds are displaying the posters but others are concerned that they may offend some of their parents,” the paper said.

Well maybe if they just display the posters in schools where the parents are not doing it, it will be good enough. NOT!!!!!

... Margaret Moran described schools’ resistance to displaying the posters as shocking. She said: “People just don’t want to talk about it.

They don't have to talk about it. Just stop doing it.

“This can involve violence, rape, kidnap — what more important issue can there be? The cultural thing is just a big smokescreen.”

Bloodthirsty Liberal blogged In a related story, prisons across the land have removed copies of The Ten Commandments from common areas, out of fear that the prohibitions against murder, theft, and perjury would offend the inmates.

Jimmie blogged The article doesn’t specifically say which parents the posters will allegedly offend, but you can make a fairly educated guess that Muslim parents are one of the larger groups.

Which is great from the Muslims’ standpoint. They didn’t even have to make a peep to have their backwards practice tacitly endorsed by the British educational system. I suppose that’s what a few riots will get you these days.

John Hawkins blogged In other words, the ninnies who run the school system over there don't even have the guts to say to people, "Forced marriages are backwards, wrong, and incompatable with the Western values that have made Britain a great nation."

Pursuing Holiness blogged The Orwellian process of culling our speech of anything that has the potential to offend continues apace. These are three ads which were either not displayed or displayed briefly and taken down because they were deemed offensive.

Advertising condemning forced marriages is unacceptable in civilized company. (The forced marriages themselves are evidently A-okay.)

Link Between Saddam and al Qaeda

ABC News reported ABC News has requested and obtained a copy of the Pentagon study which shows Saddam Hussein had no links to Al Qaeda. It's government report the White House didn't want you to read: yesterday the Pentagon canceled plans to send out a press release announcing the report's availability and didn't make the report available via email or online. Based on the analysis of some 600,000 official Iraqi documents seized by US forces after the invasion and thousands of hours of interrogations of former officials in Saddam's government now in US custody, the government report is the first official acknowledgment from the US military that there is no evidence Saddam had ties to al Qaeda.

And yet Ed Morrissey says Saddam supported at least two al-Qaeda groups: Pentagon, Andy McCarthy says CONNECTED: Iraq and al Qaeda , Stephen F. Hayes says How, then, to explain this sentence about Iraq and al Qaeda from the report's abstract: "At times, these organizations would work together in pursuit of shared goals but still maintain their autonomy and independence because of innate caution and mutual distrust"? And how to explain the "considerable overlap" between their activities which led not only to the appearances of ties but to a "de facto link between the organizations?" and goes on to cite other indications in the report.

Identity politics

USATODAY.com reported The passion fueling the Democrats' history-making presidential campaign is putting two of the party's most important constituencies — women and African-Americans — on what could be a collision course.

At a meeting this week with black newspaper publishers, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton fielded tough questions. Hazel Trice Edney, editor of Blackpressusa.com, asked the New York senator how she plans "to retain the trust and confidence of the African-American community?"

That trust and confidence shuld be based on what she DOES for them, not what she or someone else says about one of them.

Some women who support Clinton are also unhappy. Campaign commentary by some talk radio hosts and TV commentators has been "incredibly sexist," said Irene Natividad, a founder of the National Women's Political Caucus. She said it has put Clinton and her supporters in a bind. "If you don't fight back, you're a wimp," Natividad said. "If you do fight back, you're something that rhymes with witch."

If you can't stand the heat, get ot of the kitchen. Oops, that isn't sexist, is it?

For months, Democratic party leaders have argued the nomination fight is good for the party, drawing voters to the polls in record-breaking numbers. Now, some express misgivings.

It just makes the explosion even bigger.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that "some of the exchange is not at the highest level" and expressed a hope that it "will return to that level.".... Barbara Reynolds, a Howard University professor, said that as an African-American woman she is pained by the increasingly sharp-elbowed Clinton-Obama campaign. "I'm afraid the two groups I love most are going to tear each other apart," she said.

That is what you get by putting up a one term senator with no experience who expects to get elected because of Black Guilt, and a woman whose only claim to fame is being married to a former governor and former president. Could the Democratic party not find a Black Governor or Woman Governor with some executive experience?

Asian Muslims protest against Danish cartoons

Yahoo! News reported Hundreds of students burnt tires and blocked roads in the eastern Pakistani city of Multan on Wednesday in protest at the reprinting in Danish newspapers of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad last month.

What did they have to do with the publication of the cartoons? In fact how many people in Multan even subscribe to Danish newspapers?

"All Muslims should fight for Islam," student leader Imran Liaquat told the crowd.

Is Islam so weak that you must burn tires on a road in rural Pakistan, blocking poor farmers from getting to market, to give it strength.

Muslim anger at the satirical cartoons, which first erupted in 2005, sparked a similar protest in Bangkok, the Thai capital where 400 Muslims marched to the Danish embassy to register their discontent.

Do they also protest the publication of other cartoons?

Dozens of police blockaded the embassy gates as the crowd chanted anti-Danish slogans, burnt a Danish flag and stamped on pictures of Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen before dispersing peacefully.

Oh well, as long as it ended peacefully.

At least 50 people have been killed in protests against the publication of the cartoons,

Killed by whom? Roving bands of Danish cartoonists, armed with pens and paper pads, drawing cartoons that cause immediate death? Or perhaps by fellow Muslims told by clerics they should be mad at something they never saw?

which Muslims say are an affront to Islam. Newspapers which have reprinted the cartoons argue they are defending the right to media freedom.

Sex Scandal - In Iran

Adnkronos reported Tehran's police chief, Reza Zarei, has been arrested after he was found nude in a local brothel with six naked prostitutes, according to report on the Iranian Farda News.

Gee, Eliot Spitzer only had one. Did Zarei's cost $4500 each? What was their diamond raiting?

Farda News is a website said to be close to the mayor of Tehran and former chief of the police forces, Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf. Following the raid, Zarei stepped down from his post as police chief. The news of his arrest however was not reported by any official Iranian news agency. According to a popular Iranian website Gooya, the order to raid the brothel was given directly by Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, chief of the judicial authorities.

Will the hookers be stoned, or what?

Before he was arrested, Zarei was in charge of the programme for the 'moralization of the city'.

Looks like he was busy rounding up the hookers.

It is alleged that in the past six months, hundreds of young people have been arrested in Iran for not respecting the Islamic code of behavior.

Bush Legacy

New York Times reported President Bush on Saturday further cemented his legacy of fighting for strong executive powers, using his veto to shut down a Congressional effort to limit the Central Intelligence Agency’s latitude to subject terrorism suspects to harsh interrogation. Mr. Bush vetoed a bill that would have explicitly prohibited the agency from using interrogation methods like waterboarding, a technique in which restrained prisoners are threatened with drowning and that has been the subject of intense criticism at home and abroad. Many such techniques are prohibited by the military and law enforcement agencies.

Anf the next President is free to tell the CIA not to use them, and given the three candidates, th next President probably will. But the mistake will be that for the next President to make, unbound by a foolish decision made by a Democratic Congress seeking to tie the hands of a Republican President.

The veto deepens his battle with increasingly assertive Democrats in Congress over issues at the heart of his legacy. As his presidency winds down, he has made it clear he does not intend to bend in this or other confrontations

Obama's strategy to deny MI & FL

Jerome Armstrong blogged Obama is sending out signals that they will reject Florida and Michigan having a new election,

Since they voted for Hillary the first time, he is afraid they would vote for her, even if he had an eual chance to compete.

while at same time rejecting the notion that either MI or FL should have their votes counted toward the Democratic nomination.... Basically, the Obama camp believes that they can control the credentials committee, based on the number of pledged delegates, and lock out MI & FL

And if he gets the nomination does he not want votes from those states in November. And is he stupid enough to think they will vote for him if he blocked their delegates from attending the convention?

-- they want the status quo to be the deal.... This sorta reminds me of when Brazille and the Gore campaign decided that, instead of doing the right thing and calling for a total state recount of Florida in 2000, they tried to just target the counties they thought would push them over the top by recount. You don't win the moral high ground by denying voters their right to have their vote counted; and you don't win by trying to play games with the rules to count some votes more than other votes.

But politicians always want to do it.

The Obama campaign seems to have bamboozled themselves into believing that only 'the math' that matters is the one that gives them the victory, and really are failing to see the big picture here of how they will lose the nomination to Clinton by trying to deny Florida and Michigan having representation.

I don't see how that would cause them to lose the nomination but the election in November is a different matter.

New McCain Ad

As law professor Ann Althouse said: I think this is a brilliant ad. It seems to be speeding into the future.... We see images from the past (intercut with views of the galaxy). Images of Churchill and Roosevelt seem to embody a mystical sense of tradition. Even though I was trying to look at this ad with a critical eye, I kept getting chills. At one point — TR looking out onto a crowd — I thought: This is the feeling of being conservative — it is a deep emotional sense that the past matters and flows into the present and makes sense out of the future.

Ann is right. This is a very effective ad.

Centrist

Jonathan Chait wrote in The New Republic The morning after Tuesday's primaries, Hillary Clinton's campaign released a memo titled "The Path to the Presidency." I eagerly dug into the paper, figuring it would explain how Clinton would obtain the Democratic nomination despite an enormous deficit in delegates. Instead, the memo offered a series of arguments as to why Clinton should run against John McCain--i.e., "Hillary is seen as the one who can get the job done"--but nothing about how she actually could. Is she planning a third-party run? Does she think Obama is going to die? The memo does not say.

Read the entire article. It has a lot of ideas how Clinton will be tearing Obama up. look forward to it, and hope she is successful. If Obama beats Clinton, she will stay in the Senate and probably become Majority Leader, and we will have to deal with her manipulation, instead of the ineffective Reid, even after McCain polishes off the inexperienced Obama. But if Clinton gets the nomination, rock star Obama will get the Majority Leader position in the Senate (he would be a fool to take the VP slot and end up in third place behind Bill Clinton, and he knows that. I am sure McCain can knock off Hillary, and then with Centrist McCain as President, ant with Obama wanting to show he can do what he said and eliminating the bickering in Washington, as Majority Leader he can try to work with President McCain in a non-partisan way.

School shooting

Earthtimes reported An armed student at Jerusalem's Mercaz Haray seminary played a crucial role in stopping a gun-wielding terrorist Thursday, but the American press is downplaying his heroism because it proves that armed students can stop campus gunmen, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

If this is true, schools should know about it.

Yitzhak Dadon, 40, was described as "a private citizen who had a gun license and was able to shoot the gunman with his pistol" by reporter Etgar Lefkovitz with the Jerusalem Post. However, many news agencies in the United States are downplaying Dadon's decisive role in the incident.

Jerusalem Post reported "We heard shooting and knew that something had happened," recounted Yitzhak Dadon, 40, who studies at the yeshiva. Dadon said he cocked his handgun and went up to the roof of the yeshiva, where he saw the terrorist spraying gunfire indiscriminately at the crowd inside. Dadon said he fired two bullets at the terrorist, who began to stumble.

At the same time, police arrived at the scene and an intense gunfight erupted with the terrorist lasting several minutes, witnesses said. The scent of gunpowder wafted in the air as undercover police stormed the building.

Times Online reported Witnesses described terrifying scenes during the shooting, with students jumping out the windows of the building to escape. It was at this point that one of the students, Yitzhak Dadon, took aim. “I lay on the roof of the study hall, cocked my gun and waited for him. He came out of the library spraying automatic fire,” said Mr Dadon, an army reservist. “He came to the entrance and I shot him twice in the head,” he said. A soldier then killed the gunman with a rifle, Mr Dadon added.

San Jose Mercury News reported Yitzhak Dadon, a part-time student, told Israeli radio that the gunman "came out of the library spraying" gunfire. "The terrorist came to the entrance, and I shot him twice in the head," Dadon said.

Rosenfeld of the police said, however, that the gunman, who has not yet been identified, was killed by an army officer who was passing by and two undercover policemen who were in the area. The gunman had a pistol and a Kalashnikov rifle and managed to change clips at least once, Rosenfeld said.
