Jonah Goldberg wrote in Los Angeles Times reported There's a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery.
Uncle Jimbo blogged Barry O got some pub recently for wanting to require kids to do mandatory public service in high school. This is a fundamentally fuzzy-headed liberal idea that approaches social problems with socialist solutions. Sure it would be nice if youngsters spent some time doing good deeds in their communities, but requiring them to do so as part of school is a type of education I don't want the educrats in charge of.
There is merit to what Jonah says, but the left does not think so.For those who don't remember, the 13th Amendment says: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime ... shall exist within the United States." I guess in Obama's mind it must be a crime to be born or to go to college.
No, it is just that the taxes he plans to raise will cut productivity so much he needs to get more people volunteering to work for free.In his speech on national service Wednesday at the University of Colorado, Obama promised that as president he would "set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year."
Being a volunteer is wonderful. But it has to be free will. Forced service is very close to slavery.Alex Knapp blogged Look, if a kid wants to spend 50 hours a year volunteering at a soup kitchen or building a house for habitat for humanity, then more power to him. If she wants to spend that time playing video games or basketball, or even *gasp!* holding down a part-time job well, that’s her choice, too. The point of America is that you got to make the choice about what you want to do with your life, not have some bureaucrat decide for you.

I think volunteer work is very important. It gives a person satisfaction and a sense of self. I also believe that no matter how old you are, you should decide this for yourself....ANON
I think everyone will have to learn spanish, as it is the second language in this country. Everytime you call up anyone they ask you "do you want to speak English or Spanish". I remember in the old days when you had to learn English or you couldn't pass a class. I prefer the old days - and now of days, you can take your Regents in your home language. I do not agree with this. LEARN ENGLISH ALREADY!!!! They didn't have ESL teachers in the old days either. Oh well, I guess all this created new jobs in the teaching profession. ANON
PS - OUR ANCESTORS HAD TO LEARN OUR HOME LANGUAGE - AMERICA SPEAKS ENGLISH, NOT SPANISH, POLISH OR ROMANIAN, ITALIAN, YIDDISH, ETC. ETC.
