NY Times Cutting 500 Jobs

WNBC reported The New York Times Co. said Tuesday it would cut about 500 jobs, or about 4 percent of its work force, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs. The reductions come atop another 200 jobs that were cut earlier this year. The Times said it expected 250 jobs at its main newspaper group to be affected, which includes the Times, the International Herald Tribune and the online operation of the Times. Of those job cuts, about 45 will come from the Times' newsroom, the company said in a statement.

Well I guess 4% is a good start, but what about the other 96%. When will they cut them?

VolkaPundit blogged This, in the same week the NYT walled off its Opinion page to all but paid subscribers. Stupid. Opinions are cheap. Everybody has one and, as the blogosphere has shown, it doesn't take any superhuman skill to express an opinion in a readable way.

Dan Gillmor blogged It's painful to watch a business I care so much about commit slow suicide this way. But the financial writing is increasingly on the wall for an industry that simply can't figure out how to handle its challenges.

GM Roper blogged I don't suppose we would be lucky enough to have Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, Frank Rich and Bob Herbert included in that count would we?
